Mount Epomeo Ischia

Mount Epomeo, 788 metres tall, is the only mountain on the island of Ischia and is a perfect place for contemplation and relaxation because of the corners that are naturally created where the luxuriant vegetation mixes with the tuff.

The easiest way to climb Mount Epomeo is from Fontana, walking about 3 km over an altitude difference of 400 metres.
The first stop on the climb to Mount Epomeo is at the church of S. Nicola and the hermitage, both built into the tuff.
The church was constructed in 1459 and until some time ago was the destination of folkloristic pilgrimages. In the chapel of the Crucifix is buried one of the island’s governors who survived death and decided to become a hermit in 1754.
At the moment, the rooms of the old kitchen and refectory have been converted into a restaurant where you can taste island culinary specialities such as the famous ischia rabbit.

The walk from this point becomes steep and, once at the top, you can enjoy an incredibly breathtaking panorama that includes the gulfs of Naples and Pozzuoli and from where the outline of the island of Ischia is easily visible.
